For his first big studio picture, German director Tom Tykwer looked to the services of production design Uli Hanisch. They had worked together previously on multiple productions. Most notable of all the sets featured is the replica of the interior of the Guggenheim Museum in New York. It was built to scale in a massive abandoned warehouse, using original Guggenheim blueprints. It is the backdrop for a massive shoot-out, so we can see why they had to shoot the scene on a set.
