Christian Grey’s Apartment: Breath Taking, Decadent & Passionate

We look back at the exquisite interior design of Fifty Shades of Grey

Christian Grey’s Apartment: Breath Taking, Decadent & Passionate

Fifty Shades of Grey was one of the hottest movies of 2015, and not just for the BDSM. The screen adaptation of EL James’ novel about the steamy relationship between Anastasia Steel and Christian Grey was one of the most anticipated and hyped releases of the last few years. But for us it was all about the interiors (honest)!

Altogether, the movie’s veteran design team provided the audience with some of the sleekest, most stylish and masculine on-screen interiors seen in recent years. Set Designer C Scott Baker says that he had to “get to know the characters and do a little psychological study about who they are” prior to engaging in design development. The design and decoration of this first instalment of Fifty Shades franchise fell to the highly accomplished husband and wife duo of production designer David Wasco and set decorator Sandy Reynolds-Wasco. Sandy described Christian’s style as “International Contemporary, à la Tom Ford, Lenny Kravitz, and Ron Arad”.

David Wasco says of Christian’s apartment: “His spaces are tightly controlled, the art and furnishings, the architecture, all deliberately chosen with an undeniable sophistication but completely devoid of feeling other than an isolated aloofness.” After seeing the movie, this makes perfect sense. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson used her connections in the art world to furnish the art in Christian’s penthouse. In fact, the attention to detail was such that the only art they felt Christian Grey would actually own should be on show in the apartment.

The palate is mostly neutral, but there are hints of colour here and there, wallpaper by DeGournay, a teal carpet, green curtains, but then of course, there is the red room! In here, the floor tiles in sensuous red leather add a sumptuous and decadent feel to the room, delineating it from the rest of the house, which has a distinctly subtle feel. The materials used are rich and expensive including sensuous wood, hammered metals, marble and leather. The furnishings throughout the entire apartment are all high end or customised pieces and come from brands that are renowned for luxury and quality. The bird and tree pattern wallpaper in one of the bedrooms is from DeGournay.

The design team collaborated with Portuguese firm Menina Design to ensure the pieces used were seductive and evocative and accurately reflected the personality and lifestyle of a playboy millionaire. The sets are decorated with spectacular furniture and lighting from Menina’s top brands DelightFull, Boca Do Lobo, Brabbu, and Koket. These pieces are more like glamourous works of art than home furnishings.

While the whole apartment is the epitome of luxury, there are a few key individual pieces we truly love. The Burlesque Console from Koket, with its tactile black embossed cobra skin and gleaming gold rings is a nod to French Caberet. The Sequoia Centre Table a sensuous touch of warm wood while the Vellum wall lights next to the elevator are made from hammered brass and were inspired by ancient vellum scrolls.

Another stunning lighting piece is the art deco shaped Turner table light by DelightFull with its glossy black lacquered shade sitting atop brass tubes. Also deserving a mention is the Chloe wall sconce by Koket whose “unexpected twists in the magically evocative ribbon awaken your deepest senses”. Bocca do Lobo’s AVENUE Folding Screen, the Eanda dining chairs and the SYMPHONY Sideboard all deserve special mention. And in Anastasia’s bedroom the Desire sofa and chair by Koket stand out.

As much as we would love to take up residence in Christian’s penthouse apartment, it was created on a soundstage in Vancouver! However, Universal studios were fully aware that Christian’s pad would be as much of a talking point as what went on there, and so the apartment has its own website (christiangreysapartment.com). Here you can tour the apartment, get cocktail recipes and even choose which piece of music you would like Christian to play on the piano as you snoop round his spectacular apartment. Oh, and speaking of the piano, it’s a $120,000 Fazioli F278 Grand Piano.

The Unrated version of Fifty Shades of Grey is now available on Blu-Ray and DVD.
