Tony Stark’s house from Iron Man

Tony Stark’s house from Iron Man

Iron Man proved to be Marvel’s greatest asset when they released the first movie back in 2008. It’s hard to imagine now, but at the time it was quite the gamble putting Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role. This turned out to be the right choice however, as audiences responded very well to the unique “R.D.J” charisma he brought to Tony Stark. The movie would go on to gross over $585m at the global box office, spawn two more sequels (which grossed a staggering $1.8bn combined) and ultimately lay the foundations on which the ever-expanding Marvel universe is now built. The three Iron Man movies gave us more than action and a smooth-talking leading man however, it also gave us Tony Stark’s much talked about cliff-top mansion.

Hugging a Malibu cliff-edge, this ultra-modern house is a fitting home for the eccentric billionaire playboy. The white concrete and large expanses of glass reflect the Californian sunshine whilst peering out over the rich blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Complete with heli-pad, swimming pool, countless rooms, and secret basement workshop of course. Designed by award winning production designer, the late J. Michael Riva and realised by an outstanding art department and Industrial Light & Magic, the house became a star in its own right.

As much as we love the exterior, it is the house’s interiors that had us watching with giddy delight. The living room with its curved walls and floor to ceiling windows is a masterful design, even if it is a set. The entrance hall is also an elaborate design. Large commercial style glazed front doors open into a double-height hall with a stairs of cantilevered steps jutting out from an exposed concrete wall. The stairs is sheltered behind a wall of glass with a cascading waterfall flowing down the glass…it is Tony Stark we are talking about after all.

No superhero house would be complete without a secret lab in the basement however, and Tony Stark definitely has one of the best out there. It is good mix of super high-tech with a traditional oil-stained petrol-head style garage. His collection of perfectly aligning sports cars would make any top ten must have car list.

The house is also a treasure trove of the some of the best designer furniture available. It is clear that Tony Stark has great taste. From mid-century classics to contemporary trend setters there is an amazing array of furniture, lighting and décor positioned throughout the house by set decorators Lauri Gaffin (Iron Man & Iron Man 2) and Danielle Berman (Iron Man 3). We have put together some of our favourites below.
